As well as being a phenomenally successful product for Amazon, the Amazon Kindle e-book reader has played a hugely important role in putting both e-books and e-book readers on the map. However, it didn’t achieve its success as a result of being the first to market. Franklin launched the eBookman reader in 1999 – more than ten years ago – and the Sony PRS reader was launched in 2006, well in advance of the original Kindle launch date of November 2007.It was the release of the Kindle 2.0 in February of 2009 that saw the market really take off. The Kindle rapidly became the top selling item on the Amazon site and, with a U.S. market share of 60%, was the clear market leader. The very fact that any new e-book reader which shows the slightest potential is immediately dubbed the “Kindle Killer” demonstrates that the Kindle is not just the market leader but the industry standard against which other e-book readers are measured. The newest contender for The Kindle crown is Apple’s iPad – and it could very well be the strongest contender yet. Is it the future of mobile computing or is it just a bigger version of the iPod Touch? At the end of the day it doesn’t matter much – it’s going to sell well for Apple.Amazon’s immediate response to the announcement of the iPad was to release an iPad “app” to allow Kindle books to be read on Apple’s new device. Based on that evidence, you would have to guess that Amazon aren’t overly concerned by the release of this latest, and possibly most credible to date, Kindle Killer. In fact, considering the number of apps that Amazon have now released to allow Kindle books to be read without the use of a Kindle – there’s one for the PC, the Mac, the iPod, the Blackberry, and now the iPad – you might be forgiven for thinking that, despite the huge success of the Kindle to date, Amazon may well be a somewhat reluctant manufacturer.Based upon their actions to date, you might suppose that Amazon have more interest in selling Kindle books than the Kindle readers to read them on. You might also think that Amazon might have a good idea where the big money will be made in the future e-book market. Perhaps this strategy is similar to selling cut price razors so as to cash in on the sales of razor blades? Only time will tell but, as far as books are concerned – be they hardback, paperback or electronic – you might expect Amazon to continue to be a market leader rather than a follower.

Very little is known about Ratan Tata, the man. Of course, his corporate achievements have been chronicled widely, especially after the Corus, Jaguar – Land Rover acquisitions and of course, the nano project, the people’s car, that made Ratan Tata a household name, mostly because he promised a car that even a middle-class Indian could afford. But this corporate head honcho’s private life remained just that, very private. Tiwari starts with an overall view of the Tata family history right from the time Jamsetji Nusservanji Tata stepped into business world from the small town of Navsari in Gujarat. Ht later chronicles the family tree and the growth of the Tata brand. As the page turn, it becomes apparent that the book is basically more about the Tata Group, and its associate companies. It narrates the growth of the company, diversification, brands, acquisitions, it’s global business and social trusts. Of course, there’s an interview with the man himself, but, but, but… dating back to 2007 and reproduced from business world. Surely, a book on Tata, whether on the group head or the company, could have merited a personal, exclusive interview! Agreed, the book covers the company’s journey in great detail. A few chapters are totally devoted to the Nano, right down to the car’s specification, test-drive and other nitty-gritty. It even chronicles the Nano debacle in Singrur and its subsequent move to Gujarat, the Taj-Mehal hotel attack, it’s rebuilding and re-opening, the companies plan for an internal anti-terror machinery, people’s views and articles on Ratan Tata, awards and global recognition, but still you come away feeling deprived. Because apart from what is already known about Ratan Tata, he’s a bachelor, is a devoted Parsi, lives alone with his books, drives himself to work in a Tata car, likes simple home cooked food, flies his own aircraft and has huge art collection, the book has nothing more to offer. Well, a let-down for me but a few colleagues who follow the market avidly and are financial cuffs seemed eager to borrow it. So to each his one. You can read this on your Amazon Kindle. It’s an ok read so when you get time just pick up your amazon kindle and start reading it.

I’m not one inclined to writing reviews but I do examine them carefully before I make a significant purchase, here on Amazon.com and on other seller web sites. So on the chance that I might say something that helps a potential buyer make up their mind, particularly someone who has not owned the first Kindle, this is my small effort to give back to the process. First of all, I loved Kindle 1 although I noted several shortcomings due primarily to the design of the hardware. I’m glad to learn that every shortcoming(except one) has been fixed beyond my expectations. When I received my Kindle 2 yesterday, I eagerly removed it from the shipping container, plugged it in and began to download my library. As I did I marveled at the new Kindle’s fresh, sleek design. It is a beauty! The main issue I had with Kindle 1 was the navigation button design and placement. My original thought was that I wanted to use my Kindle 1 without a cover but I quickly learned that doing so wasn’t practical. I like to read holding the Kindle with one hand and it just didn’t work well because I kept bumping the next, previous and back buttons. So I began to use the cover it came with so I could hold the Kindle by the cover, only to learn that this cover did not keep the device securely in place very well. So I bought an m-edge cover, which is bulkier and the front does not fold back easily. I was stuck reading using two hands and I didn’t like that at all. Kindle 2 solves all these problems. I’m not going to bother with a cover at all now. I love the way it feels in my hand without a cover. It is easy to navigate without any risk of accidentally changing the page I’m on. I will probably buy a Belkin sleeve to protect it when I take it out but that’s all. Now my reading experience is complete! The Kindle 2’s redesigned features are fantastic. The display is better and the 5-way button is a major improvement. I do a lot of highlighting and this design fix is huge. Looking up words is much easier and many times faster. One improved feature I haven’t notice any comment on is the progress bar at the bottom of each book page. Now it shows the total number of locations and the percent already read. This is so much better than the old way of determining how far I’m into a book. Thank you, design team! The fact that Kindle 2 has no SD card capability and the battery is not user-serviceable is not an issue with me. Even with a few hundred books in my library, it will be a long time before the 2 gig memory starts to be a limiting factor and when it does (if it does) I’ll just archive what I’ve already read. Amazon’s design team has made it simple to pull archived books back to the Kindle 2 without having to go to a computer. The only item on my wish list that was not addressed in Kindle 2 is the lack of an improved file storage system. It would have been nice to have that but it doesn’t take away from my enjoyment. Page turns are significantly faster and the page reloads are less intrusive to the reading experience. On/off buttons are repositioned to be easily accessible. The home page is easier to navigate. There are other improvements that many others have already noted so I’m going to stop here without repeating everything that’s been said already. But the biggest thing about Kindle (both 1 and 2) is the Amazon store and how simple it is to browse and buy books from. I’m so impressed with the way they have seamlessly brought the store together with the reading device via Whispernet to make the digital reading experience such a wonderful thing to enjoy.
